Heidelberg is, in my opinion, the most beautiful city in Germany and easy to reach by train. Groups of up to 5 people can travel inexpensively with the Länderticket Baden-Württemberg. There are direct connections from many German cities.
Arrived at the train station in Heidelberg, you are first expected a slight tristesse. Nothing points to the tempting old town. To reach it, you need to walk 2 km or take the S-Bahn for 10 minutes. The public transport is comfortably timed and brings you quickly to the stop Peterskirche. There is a good exit point to start into the old town.

Traveling by public transport has the advantage that there is no need to search for a parking space. Public parking spaces are almost non-existent.
Drivers must therefore resort to parking garages, for which a daily fee of about 12€ applies. Moreover, no vehicle is necessary to discover the compact old town. Everything can be done comfortably on foot.

Heidelberg Fortress – Best Viewpoint of the City

The city is known for its beautiful old town, which is characterized by historic buildings, narrow streets and romantic squares. Probably the most famous sight of the city is the Heidelberg Castle, which towers majestically on a hill above the city. The castle is one of the largest and most important ruins in Germany and one of the most visited sights in the city.

Heidelber Schloss

The history of Heidelberg Castle dates back to the 13th century, when it was built by the Palatine Counts of Heidelberg. Over the centuries, the castle was expanded and rebuilt several times, becoming an impressive mix of Gothic, Renaissance and Baroque architecture. In the 16th and 17th centuries, the castle was the magnificent home of the Electors of the Palatinate and a center of art and culture.

One of the most famous legends of the castle is the story of the “barrel” barrel, a huge wine barrel that was supposedly kept in the castle grounds. The barrel was supposedly so large that it was used as an inn with a dance floor and music stage. Although there is no archaeological evidence of the barrel’s existence, the legend remains alive today and attracts the attention of visitors.

One of the most remarkable parts of the palace is the Friedrichsbau, a Renaissance-style building commissioned by Elector Frederick IV. The Friedrichsbau was a symbol of the wealth and power of the Palatine counts and impresses visitors with its ornate facade and intricate carvings.

Old bridge: Landmark of the city

One highlight is the famous Old Bridge, which spans the Neckar River and connects the Old Town with the Neuenheim district. The bridge was built in the 18th century and is one of the city’s landmarks. The bridge spans the Neckar River and connects the old town with the district of Neuenheim.

Heidelberg alte Brücke

The bridge spans the Neckar River and connects the old town with the Neuenheim district. With its impressive architecture and eventful history, it is an absolute highlight for any visitor.

The bridge was built in the 18th century and replaced an older wooden bridge that had been destroyed due to flooding and war. The current structure consists of nine arches and is about 200 meters long. The bridge was built of red sandstone and is a real eye-catcher.

From here you have a fantastic view of the city and the river.

The University of Heidelberg is also worth a visit. It is one of the oldest and most renowned universities in Germany and is known for its architecture and history. Numerous important personalities have studied here, including the philosopher Hegel and the poet Hölderlin.

Those interested in art should definitely visit the Kurpfälzische Museum. The museum houses an extensive collection of paintings, sculptures and art objects from the region.

In addition to the numerous sights, Heidelberg also has a lively cultural scene. Concerts, theater performances and festivals are held here throughout the year. Especially in summer, the city is a popular destination for open-air events and festivals.

If you have had enough of the city, you can also take a trip to the surrounding region. Here there are numerous opportunities for hiking, cycling and relaxing in nature.
