The main advantage of a train journey is the freely available attention.
As the landscape rushes past, the personal literature list can finally be worked on.
Audiobook apps are ideal for those who prefer to be read aloud rather than reading.

Spooks: A must for Spotify customers

For some providers, audiobooks are already part of the offer without users knowing it.
In addition to the musical offer, Spotify Premium customers have access to numerous podcasts, audiobooks and radio plays.
Only a few users are aware of this. Because Spotify treats the category audiobooks in the internal presentation very neglected, which makes it difficult to find.

This is where the free Spooks app comes in. This acts as a well-sorted table of contents for Spotify. Access is made with the login data from Spotify to establish a synchronization.
The intuitive filter functions of Spooks provide a good overview of the offer.
Here, the user can sort between the two main categories of radio plays and audiobooks.
With audiobooks, i.a. can be chosen from the following topics:

  • New hit
  • Highlights & awards
  • Bestseller
  • Tension
  • Humor
  • Novels
  • Business & Career

Kleinere Auswahl als bei Audible

In direct comparison to Audible, the audio book app from Amazon, the selection is significantly smaller. Numerous current bestsellers are missing.
However, a flat rate for current bestsellers cannot really be expected for a price of € 9.99 a month.
If you consider that individual audiobooks usually cost between 8 – 30 €.
I see Spooks much more as a useful addition for audiobook fans who already have a premium account with Spotify.

Audible: Gigantic selection & bestseller

The Audible app, which belongs to the Amazon group, is probably the best-known audiobook app.
Here the listener can choose from over 200,000 tracks. Almost all works published as audiobooks are available.

Similar to Netflix or Spotify, the customer subscribes to Audible. However, not in the flat rate model.
For a monthly fee of €9.95, there is 1 value credit that can be exchanged for audiobooks.
Almost all new releases cost this price and are therefore significantly below the price that other providers charge for a single purchase.
For example, as a direct single download or as a purchase of a physical CD.
But be careful: the audiobooks purchased from Audible can only be used as long as the subscription is valid. An export is not possible.
Just like Spotify, Audible is a closed ecosystem to keep the user as long as possible.
This is not a problem for me as a regular customer because I use the service for a longer period and as long as I have unlimited access to the files. In any case, I only hear a few outstanding audiobooks that I buy separately in an emergency. However, collectors should rather think about other variants.

Bookbeat: Worthwhile for passionate long-term listeners

Bookbeat is a good alternative for dedicated audiobook fans, for whom 1 book per month is not enough. Instead of selected titles, the listening hours are relevant for billing. In the standard version, which is similar to the Audible price of €9.99 per month, the listener receives 25 hours of listening volume. A good deal. Because some bestsellers have a duration of less than 5 hours.

With a specific focus on audiobooks with a shorter term, 4-5 titles per month are easily included in the standard version with no additional costs. Only a few works, primarily biographies, take significantly more time. Becoming from Michelle Obama has a runtime of over 19 hours. While Warren Buffet’s biography The Snowball takes 37 hours. However, these seasons are absolute exceptions.
Unlimited volume for the more than 50,000 titles is available to the listener in the premium version of €19.90. Here it is even possible to add family members for €4.90 / month and person.
